If, like me, you’re always busy, then you’ll quickly find that you just don’t have time to do the important things. Not the urgent things – they crop up, you deal with them straight away, and then you look back and all the stuff you meant to do, just got forgotten about.
But that stuff is important.
Whether it’s writing your daily letters, whether it’s ringing up those people you haven’t spoken to for three months, whether it’s having a quick catch-up with all your staff.
You need to do it, but it keeps getting shoved to the back-burner.
So now, I set up a “default diary”. This just fills my calendar with a bit of time set aside for important stuff. My Monday planning session and our Tuesday staff meeting are obvious candidates. But Friday afternoon is for writing these letters. Monday afternoon is for planning out the next version of a customer project which keeps sliding because other stuff keeps getting in the way.
It doesn’t guarantee that it will get done – but it does make me stop and think. So next week, I make sure that I keep the time set aside. And it does get done.
