One of the big drivers for me starting my own business is that my boss didn’t really understand what I did but overruled me when I made decisions.
I’m not really good at being told what to do.
But having the freedom to choose doesn’t just come from not having a boss.
Most of the many years that I’ve been running my business I’ve not been able to choose what I do next – because I’ve still been bossed around by money.
I need to pay the mortgage, therefore I need some money, therefore I need this work even though it’s actually crushing me.
That’s why I now don’t let the money boss me about. I don’t let the business boss me around.
It’s not perfect and I’ve still got a long way to go, but I’ve got routines and habits that make sure the business stuff does what it needs to do, giving me a few hours each day where I get to choose.
That structure, that foundation, gives me the freedom to do things the way I want to.
